Hit

HIT

It was chilly for an August afternoon but I was having a wonderful time.
Carnival Rides
Roller Coasters
We were Upstate at a country fair, just us and our little black puppy.
While we were having fun,
Up and Down
Sideways and Upside Down,
Joy was in the car the whole time.
Getting restless
Chewing on her bone
Wanting to go home.
I bet it felt like days to her but it was mere hours for us.

Finally, after hours of fun, we finally left to head home,
When suddenly, my older sister gingerly said:
"Let's go to the Deli"
And we all agreed.
We pulled up the curb on the opposite side
(I don't even know why we did that)
And the window was left
Open
For our puppy to breathe fresh mountain air.

We all got out and looked if any cars were coming.
There were none.
And so we crossed the street.
Little did we know there was a gigantic RV turning up the block.
We were already inside when we heard it.
Very loud very intense yelping.
At first we were confused and did not know what that sound was.
And then we saw it.
Enormous car.
Tiny puppy, yelping, crying, trying to get up.
Pieces of her legs in the tires.
Lots of blood flowing on the black pavement.

I don't remember well what happened next.
Holding my puppy,
her legs wrapped in towels soaked in blood.
Blood everywhere.
Joy whimpering and breathing heavy,
waiting for someone to save her.
Driving to the hospital and finally
Handing her over to the veterinarians
At three in the morning.

She survived.
She is one lucky dog.
